Spirituality and Sexuality in Jung
From Sermon V (septem sermones to mortuos, 1916)
The world of the Gods manifests itself in spirituality and sexuality. The Celestial Gods appear in spirituality, earth's. Spirituality Conceives and embraces.
It is female and therefore we call it mater coelestis, mother Celeste. Sexuality Generates and creates. It is male, and so we call it phallus, the earth's father. Human sexuality is more terrestrial, women's sexuality is more spiritual. The spirituality of man is more heavenly, advancing towards the greatest.
The spirituality of women is more terrestrial, advancing towards the smallest. Deceptive and diabolical is the spirituality of women moving towards the greatest.
Each must proceed to their own place.
Man and woman become demons for each other when they do not divide their spiritual paths, because the nature of the creature is the distinction.
Man's sexuality goes to the earth, the sexuality of the woman to the spiritual. Man and woman become demons for each other if they don't distinguish their sexuality.
Man must learn to know the smallest, the greatest woman. Man must distinguish himself from spirituality and sexuality. You must call mother spirituality and place it between heaven and earth. He must call sexuality and place it between himself and the earth, because his mother and phallus are superhuman demons and manifestations of the world of the gods. They are more effective for us than for the Gods, because they are similar to our nature. If you do not see them as a nature above you and around you, you become them as the quality of the pleroma.
Spirituality and sexuality are not your qualities, they are not things that you possess and containing: they possess and contain you, because they are powerful demons, manifestations of the Gods, and so things that go beyond you, existing for themselves. No man has a spirituality for himself, but he is under the law of spirituality and sexuality. So no one escapes these demons. You must consider them demons, and a common task and danger, a common burden that life has placed on your shoulders. So life is for you also a task and a
Common Danger, as are the Gods, and first of all the terrible abraxas.
The man is weak, so communion is indispensable. If your communion is not under the mother's sign, then it is under the sign of the phallus. No Communion is suffering and sickness. Communion in everything is dismemberment and dissolution. The Distinction Leads to uniqueness. Uniqueness is opposed to communion. But given the weakness of the man in the bosom of the gods and the demondemoni and their invincible law, the necessary communion. So there must be as much communion as it is necessary, not because of man, but because of the Gods, the gods force you to communion. And the more they force you, the more you need communion, the worse it is.
In Communion every man is to others, so that communion is maintained,
because you need it.
In Oneness, the single man must be superior to others,
so that every man belongs to himself and avoids slavery.
In Communion there must be continence,
There must be generosity in oneness.
Communion is the depth,
Uniqueness is height.
The right measure in communion purifies and preserves.
The right measure in uniqueness purifies and adds.
Communion gives us heat.
Uniqueness gives us the light.
